It all began when Joel discovered the magic of mushrooms almost 20 years ago. What started off as a hobby growing mushrooms on denim and old cardboard boxes in his closet led to years of independent study on the medicinal benefits of mushrooms and cultivation techniques.
In 2015, Joel was invited to intern at Mushroom Mountain in South Carolina. Within two weeks, Joel was asked, “What will it take to keep you here?” At Mushroom Mountain, Joel led farm tours, facilitated workshops, managed their lab, and made significant improvements to the overall cultivation side of operations.
In 2020, Joel wanted to bring this same great knowledge and passion for mushrooms back to his home state, establishing The Oklahoma Mushroom Company! Mae joined him in 2022 as the operations manager, keeping the business running smoothly while also playing a key role in the cultivation process.
Together, Joel and Mae manage their homestead and raise their four children, ensuring the family stays rooted in both the business and the land, while providing the best, freshest, high quality mushrooms and specialty products.
